A HUGE magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck near New Caledonia in the South Pacific on Wednesday. The massive tremor was followed by a series of aftershocks in the area. ✔ The quake hit at a shallow depth of 27 km (17 miles) about 372km (230 miles) east of Noumea, the capital at 9.43am local time (12.43am BST), the US Geological Survey said ✔ An alert from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said: Hazardous tsunami waves from this earthquake are possible within 300km of the epicentre along the coast of Vanuatu and New Caledonia
