He was fatally injured fleeing afterwards. ✔ Tributes to Agung’s bravery were led by Yohannes Sirait, spokesman for Air Navigation Indonesia, who said Agung’s sacrifice had potentially saved the lives of hundreds of people ✔ Palu airport has been damaged to the extent that it has lost at least 500 meters of its 2,500 meter-long runway, but is still operational for rescue aircraft

THE Indonesia earthquake claimed the life of a hero air traffic controller who refused to leave his tower to ensure a plane was able to take off safely before tsunami waters rushed in. ✔ Flights coming into and out of the region were halted as the airport closed yesterday ✔ Aftershocks were experienced and more powerful earthquakes followed throughout August, with the UK Home Office advising Britons against travelling to the holiday hotspot
