‘America First’ Is a Good Idea, Sadly There Is Very Little of It in Evidence
11/13/2018, 10:49:19 AMAs we near the halfway point of President Donald Trump’s first term, U.S. foreign policy is being widely portrayed as off the rails. Yet when one looks past the Trumpian bluster, the predetermined media narrative, and the serial incompetence of an understaffed and often inexperienced administration, one finds a foreign policy agenda that differs far more in style than in substance from its predecessors’. ✔ U.S. sanctions on Iran are damaging relations with a host of other nations by restricting their trade, even as the president extolled the primacy of sovereignty at the United Nations General Assembly in September ✔ So those who believe in foreign policy realism and restraint are left with the worst of both worlds: a presidency that espouses an America First agenda but then proceeds to sabotage support for these policies through reckless rhetoric, incompetent implementation, and a refusal to carry out anything approaching a thoughtful, non-interventionist strategy

Decoding Hypersonic Putin on Day of Remembrance
11/13/2018, 11:25:38 AMThe Elysee Palace protocol was implacable. Nobody in Paris would be allowed to steal the spotlight away from the host, President Emmanuel Macron, during the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day marking the end of World War I. After all, Macron was investing all his political capital as he visited multiple World War I battlefields while warning against the rise of nationalism and a surge in right-wing populism across the West. He was careful to always place the emphasis on praising “patriotism.” ✔ Putin added that Moscow has not scheduled military drills near NATO borders as an attempt to appease an already tense situation ✔ On top of it, the Russia-China strategic partnership simply won’t allow any funny – reckless – games to be played against a crucial node of Eurasia integration

Much Ado About Putin's Decline Ratings but He Remains Substantially More Popular Than Western Leaders
11/13/2018, 8:47:26 AMMuch has been made in Russian and Western media about Russian President Vladimir Putin’s declining approval ratings. However, despite the major ratings decline, Putin’s approval rating remains far above any Western leader. More importantly, his rating remains higher than it has been in long periods of is rule. In other words, the fall in Putin’s rating marks a return from normal after excessively and inordinately high ratings from late 2014 until early 2018. ✔ For example, during his last months as prime minister in 2011-2012 through nearly all of the first two years of his third term (2012-2016), Putin’s approval rating was equal or lower than his October 2018 rating of 66 percent ✔ The glitch in December 2011 was the result of poor election management and crushed hopes of some for a perestroika 2.0 under the more liberal Medvedev continuing in the presidency for another term
